Cotton has been cultivated since early antiquity. In ancient Greece, cotton was most probably imported and expanded as a cultivation by the troops of Alexander the Great, in 330 BC.

The byproducts of cotton are also very important, as the cotton seed produces an oil that can either be used in soap-making or processed into an edible oil.
